We say goodbye and good luck to two of our PhD students

Dr Colm Doyle and Dr Jamie Edgerton have successfully completed their postgraduate studies in our group and moved on to pastures new.

Colm joined the group in January 2021 after completing his bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from University College Cork (UCC) Ireland. Colm’s interests in the fundamental mechanisms that regulate gene expression led him to focus on G-quadruplex DNA structures within distal regulatory elements in the human genome. He enjoyed developing and applying new techniques to answer these fundamental questions. Originating from Ireland, Colm was presented with a leprechaun outfit and a pot of gold during the post-viva celebrations.  Colm has now started a postdoctoral position at the EMBL Heidelberg.

Following an undergraduate in Natural Sciences at Cambridge and his master’s studies in the Balasubramanian Group, Jamie remained in the lab to start his PhD in October 2020. He contributed to the development of a novel approach for sequencing modified cytosines using a modification-specific unnatural base pair, and pursued the identification and characterisation of proteins that selectively interact with asymmetrically modified cytosine-guanine DNA motifs. On completing his PhD, Jamie joined Costello Medical Consulting as an analyst focusing on market access and rare diseases.

We all wish both Colm and Jamie the very best in their future careers.  We will miss them!
